Wilkins wins Jamaica's second gold

TOLUCA, Mexico (CMC):

Quarter-miler Bobby-Gaye Wilkins won Jamaica's second gold medal at the North American Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Under-23 Championships on Saturday. Following Schillonie Calvert's 100-metre victory run Friday afternoon, Wilkins cruised to victory in the women's 400-metre dash in a time of 51.34 seconds. The event saw a 1-2 finish for Jamaica, as Anastasia Le-Roy copped the silver medal with 52.21 to hold off Canada's Jenna Martin 52.45.

St Vincent and the Grenadines' Kineke Alexander, currently preparing to represent her country at the Olympic Games in Beijing next month, was unable to find her rhythm on the day and finished in sixth place in 53.22.

In the men's division, United States Virgin Islands' Tabarie Henry's brave run saw him separating Americans LeJerald Betters and Ahmad Jamil Hubbard for a silver medal. Henry posted 45.37 seconds to finish behind Betters, the only man on the day to dip below the 45-second mark with his 44.75 winning time.

Hubbard (45.96) completed the medal places.

Jamaicans Riker Hylton (46.30) and Michael Mason (46.43) finished outside the medal places in fourth and fifth, respectively. In a wind affected men's 110-metre hurdles, former Barbadian World Youth silver medallist Ryan Brathwaite followed American Jason Richardson to line in 13.50. Richardson's winning time was 13.32. Jamaica's Kallinka Pitt crossed the line at 14.04 for fourth place. In the women's 100-metre hurdles event, Jamaican Latoya Greaves managed to recover from a slow start to hurdle her way to a bronze medal in 13.51 seconds.

Former World Junior Championships bronze medallist, American Tiffany Ofili, dominated the race with her 12.82 performance. Her teammate Kristin Castlin finished second in 13.21.

Meanwhile, Anguilla's former World Youth long jump finalist and former CARIFTA Games medallist, Shara Proctor, won a silver medal in the women's triple jump. The 19-year-old Proctor, who turns 20 in two-months, posted 13.11 metres to finish behind USA's Crystal Manning (13.52m). Caribbean athletes then grabbed three other medals at the close of the second day to raise their tally at the championships.

A Jamaican quartet of Samantha Henry, Latoya Greaves, Schillonie Calvert and Anastasia Le-Roy captured silver in the women's 4x100-metre relay in 43.73 after being edged out by USA, whose winning time was 43.64.

The Dominican Republic was a distant third in 46.23.

The United States also won the gold medal in the men's equivalent - outclassing the field with a fast 38.39 performance. Canada won the silver in 39.31 with the bronze going the Cayman Islands in 39.68. Jamaica finished in fourth place in 39.95.
