Darrel attended Five Rivers Junior Secondary then El Dorado Secondary followed by Southern Union State Community College.

An outstanding career in track so far has seen him place 1st at the 1998 Carifta Games 100m 200m, 2000 Carifta Games 100m 200m 4x100m 1st most outstanding male athlete, 2000 Chile World Junior Champs 100m 4th, 2001 Canada World Senior Champs 4x100m 2nd National Record (38.59) Youngest Senior Medal, 2001 Hungary World Youth Championships 100m 1st Games record, 2002 Jamaica World Junior champs 100m 1st Games Record (10.09), 2003 Paris World Championships 100m 2nd 10.08, 2006 Cyprus 100m 2nd , France 100m Switzerland 100m 2nd, Greece 100m 1st .

At the beginning of his career he performed well in both the World Youth and Junior Championships. The 100 m at the 2003 World Championships saw him finishing second behind surprise winner Kim Collins. In June 2005 he set a new personal best with 9.99, thus becoming one of the few athletes to run below 10 seconds. He is also another Nike contracted sprinter signed in 2002 and a definite medal hopeful for Trinidad and Tobago.
